Every writer eventually faces a temptation that feels noble, responsible—even necessary.

You start with a story.
Then, somewhere along the way, you decide it needs to say something.

That’s where things often go wrong.

Hollywood provides a high-profile example of this mistake, but the lesson applies just as much to novelists, series writers, and anyone building long-form fiction. Writing for message instead of story doesn’t just weaken a project—it can derail or completely destroy it.

And the worst part? Most writers don’t realize it’s happening until readers start quietly walking away.

Story First Is Not an Anti-Theme Argument

Let’s be clear: this is not an argument against themes, meaning, or ideas in fiction.

Stories have always explored morality, identity, power, love, loyalty, and loss. Every good story has something underneath it. The problem arises when that “something” stops emerging naturally from the narrative and starts being installed deliberately.

There is a crucial difference between:

• Writing a story that reveals a theme

• Writing a story that delivers a message

Readers can feel that difference instantly.

When the theme emerges organically, it feels honest. When a message is imposed, it feels manipulative.

What Happens When Writers Shift From Story to Message

In the early stages of a project—especially one that hasn’t yet found an audience—writers tend to focus on fundamentals: character, conflict, stakes, and payoff. Decisions are driven by what makes sense for the story, not by what needs to be said.

That’s often when the best work happens.

But success changes incentives.

Once a series gains attention, readership, or cultural relevance, the pressure shifts. The story is no longer just a story; it becomes a platform. Writers begin to feel responsible for representing ideas, correcting perceived gaps, or responding to external expectations.

This is where writing becomes reactive instead of intentional.

Characters stop acting based on who they are and start acting based on what the author wants the audience to hear. Scenes pause to explain themselves. Conflict becomes selective. Consequences soften for certain characters while intensifying for others—not because the story demands it, but because the message does.

At that point, readers stop experiencing the story and start noticing the author.

That’s a fatal shift.

Why This Is Especially Dangerous for Series Writers

Standalone novels can sometimes survive this mistake.

Series rarely do.

A series is a long-term promise to the reader. Early installments establish rules—emotional, moral, and narrative. Readers invest not just in characters, but in how the world works and what matters within it.

When a writer changes those rules mid-series to accommodate a new message, the foundation cracks.

Relationships lose coherence. Character arcs stall or reverse without justification. New elements appear that feel disconnected from the original premise. The story begins to drift.

Readers don’t always rage-quit.

They disengage quietly.

They stop recommending.
They stop anticipating.
Eventually, they stop reading.

The Difference Between Organic Theme and Author Agenda

Organic themes arise from character decisions and consequences.

Author agendas override them.

If a theme is truly embedded in the story, it doesn’t need protection. Characters can question it, resist it, even contradict it—and the story becomes stronger for it.

When a writer feels the need to shield a theme from challenge, that theme doesn’t belong at the center of the narrative. Fiction thrives on tension, contradiction, and unresolved questions. Messaging thrives on certainty.

Those impulses are incompatible.

A story must be willing to surprise even its creator.

Hollywood Is the Warning Label

Hollywood franchises offer a visible version of this problem because the stakes are public and financial, but the mechanics are the same. Projects that began as character-driven stories often falter once they pivot toward using their popularity to “say something” more directly.

The issue isn’t what they’re saying.

It’s when and how they’re saying it.

When message overtakes story, narrative cohesion collapses. Audiences sense the shift. Engagement drops. The franchise weakens—not because the audience rejects ideas, but because it rejects being lectured.

Writers should take note.

A Simple Rule That Prevents Most of This

If you want to explore an idea, let the story argue with itself.

If you want to persuade the reader, you are no longer writing fiction—you are writing commentary.

That doesn’t mean your beliefs don’t belong in your work. It means they must submit to the same rules as everything else: character logic, narrative consistency, and consequence.

The story gets the final say.

Not the author.

Choose Longevity Over Urgency

Every writer will feel the urge to “use the moment” at some point—especially once an audience is listening. But moments pass. Stories endure.

The fastest way to damage a book, a series, or an entire body of work is to let urgency replace discipline.

Write the story you promised.

Let meaning emerge.

And trust readers enough to find it on their own.

To live is to observe change—especially technological change. We’ve seen this pattern countless times throughout history. In the late ’70s and ’80s, car manufacturers shifted from fully human assembly lines to robotic ones. During the Industrial Revolution, mechanical looms threatened handloom weavers. And long before that, the automobile ended the era of the horse and buggy.

Technology always introduces change.
Often that change is destructive.
But destruction frequently makes room for evolution.

In fact, more people ended up working in textiles after mechanization than before. The industry didn’t die—it grew. It shifted. It adapted.

I start here because it gives context to the very real conversation happening now around AI—how it’s already impacting creative industries, and how writers must adapt.

AI isn’t coming.
It’s already here.

You may have heard the news cycle about an “AI-generated country hit.” The story was exaggerated, but it spread because people believe disruption is imminent.

Another example is more grounded: a Black female poet used AI music tools to turn her poetry into songs. Those tracks took off on Spotify—so much so that she landed a $3 million record deal. She didn’t sing. She didn’t play instruments. She worked creatively with the tools available.

That’s disruption in real time.

So where does that leave creatives—artists, photographers, musicians, and especially writers? What’s ethical? What’s practical? And how do you protect your reputation while using the tools that now define the modern market?

To answer that, we need to start with what AI actually is.

AI Isn’t Intelligence—It’s Speed

Despite the name, artificial intelligence isn’t conscious thought. It doesn’t ponder or reflect. What it does is process massive amounts of data—far more than a human mind could—at incredible speed.

Writing teachers have always told aspiring authors:

Humans learn through exposure. By reading thrillers, you absorb the rhythm of tension. By reading romance, you absorb emotional pacing. Babies learn language the same way—by listening.

AI is doing the same thing, only at scale. It studies patterns across millions of examples.

Not to copy them,
but to identify the structures behind them.

That’s why AI feels so powerful—and so unsettling.

But knowing how it works frees you from fear and allows you to use it responsibly.

The Nightmare Scenario Everyone Fears

People fear the version of AI where someone writes nothing and prompts:

“Create a John Wick-style thriller with these characters…”

…then publishes whatever the system spits out.

And yes, some people do exactly that.
They flood Amazon with low-effort books hoping a trickle of sales across hundreds of titles will add up.

This is happening.
This is why the stigma exists.

But here’s the truth:

You can drown in the wave or learn to ride it.

AI isn’t leaving.
The market isn’t going backward.
You don’t have to become a machine—but you do need to understand the tools.

AI Is a Microwave: Fast, Useful, and Completely Uneven

Here’s the best analogy for creative AI:

It’s a microwave.

Yes, you can cook a whole chicken in a microwave.
No, you shouldn’t.

It will cook unevenly—some spots underdone, some overdone.
AI is exactly the same.

It can:

• speed up your work

• produce early drafts

• generate ideas

• assist with grammar

• help with structure

…but the output will always require a human chef to finish the meal.

For example, using AI for grammar and spelling is fantastic. You can dump a chapter into ChatGPT or Claude, run a correction pass, and clear 95% of the noise instantly. But if you don’t give very specific instructions, AI will rewriteyour prose instead of simply fixing errors.

Which means you still have to read carefully afterward.

The microwave heats the food.
It doesn’t finish the dish.

Why This Matters for Real Writers

The hard truth about writing is this:

Not ideas.
Not covers.
Not character sheets.
Not worldbuilding.

The hard part is consistently producing words.
And AI can help by letting you draft without stopping to correct every typo.

Great writing is not about perfect sentences in the first draft.
It’s about getting raw material down—clay you can shape later.

AI is a blunt chisel.
You are the sculptor.

AI as a Research Engine

Research-heavy genres—crime, legal thrillers, hard sci-fi, mysteries—can devour time. AI tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT can handle the heavy lifting quickly.

The catch?

AI is not always accurate.

For nonfiction that requires exactness, you must double-check everything. But for fiction, especially when exploring topics outside your expertise, AI dramatically speeds up your learning curve.

Used wisely, it becomes a research assistant—not a fact machine.

AI as a Craft Coach

One of AI’s most underrated uses is teaching you to write better.

You can paste a chapter and ask:

• “How well does this show rather than tell?”

• “Does this dialogue sound natural?”

• “Is the pacing tight?”

• “Is my emotional arc clear?”

AI will highlight weak areas and explain why.

It becomes a personalized writing coach, helping you identify blind spots the same way test prep teaches you where you need improvement.

It won’t replace your judgment—but it will accelerate your growth.

AI for Worldbuilding and Reader Engagement

Now we arrive at something crucial: reader psychology.

In many genres—sci-fi, fantasy, historical romance—readers fall in love not only with characters, but with the world.

Think:

• Star Wars

• Bridgerton

• Dune

• The Witcher

• The Expanse

Fans want extras:

• lore

• maps

• alien cultures

• family trees

• timelines

• glossaries

• character art

• spaceship schematics

• alternate POV scenes

In the past, only large publishers or film studios could produce this level of ancillary content.

AI changes that.

A single author can now:

• expand lore

• generate visual references

• create cultural guides

• build backstories

• design artifacts

• illustrate locations

These “extras” turn casual readers into superfans.

Superfans buy every book.
Superfans follow your newsletter.
Superfans build your career.

AI lets independent authors compete at a level that used to require entire teams.

AI for Marketing and Media

AI isn’t just a writing tool. It’s a marketing engine.

You can now create:

• book trailers

• ad concepts

• social-media visuals

• short promotional videos

• character dossiers

• world guides

• mood boards

• website content

Will AI replace professional designers and editors?

No.

Remember the microwave.
AI creates a rough draft.
Professionals create the masterpiece.

But AI gets you to your vision faster and cheaper.

A Final Caution: Reputation Still Matters

For now—this may change as younger generations dominate the market—there is still real stigma around AI writing.

Some readers will walk away forever if they think AI wrote your book.

And they will not be quiet about it.

This already happened to an author who published a well-received novel, then accidentally pasted an AI prompt into her next book. Once readers discovered it, her reputation collapsed. She was labeled the writing equivalent of Milli Vanilli—accused of faking her art.

So how do you avoid this?

1. Don’t use AI to write your book.

Not entire scenes.
Not entire chapters.
Not prose meant to be yours.

Your voice is your value.

2. Be transparent about how you do use AI.

Explain your process in newsletters like this one.

For example, I use AI to:

• evaluate prose I’ve already written,

• check chapters against stylistic goals,

• identify revision targets,

• and help plan future books.

But the writing itself—the storytelling, voice, choices—that’s me.

AI comes back into the process after the draft to help with editing, worldbuilding, and marketing.

That’s the proper use:

AI strengthens the ecosystem around your story, not the story itself.

If readers trust that, they will trust you.

Why do writers choose the stories they tell? It’s a deceptively simple question. With so many genres—romance, thrillers, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, mashups, and the endless parade of self-publishing subgenres—you’d expect a simple answer. But every writer’s path is different.

One quick distinction: writer isn’t the same as author. Journalists are writers. Screenwriters craft blueprints for film and TV. Authors build worlds on the page. For a long time, I never considered myself an author at all.

Part of that comes from how quickly authors get defined by genre. Stephen King is “the horror guy,” even though he writes far beyond that. J.K. Rowling is synonymous with Harry Potter, yet publishes crime novels under a pen name. Once an audience connects your name to a genre, that expectation follows you forever.

But the deeper truth is this:
Writers have more than one kind of story in their heads.

That’s where I sit. I’m not a traditional author so much as a storyteller. Characters and scenarios show up—sometimes uninvited—and demand to be explored. I don’t chase trends; I chase ideas. Fame, money, and success are welcome goals, but the real drive is simpler:

There’s a story in my head, and I want to share it.

How I Choose My Stories

If you’ve read my bio, you know I juggle dozens of ideas—50 or more at this point. They don’t fit neatly into genres. Most blend fantasy, sci-fi, and thriller elements; a few wander into romantic comedy territory. My interests are broad, and if you’re a writer, yours might be too.

So how do you pick the “right” idea?
We’ll talk about writing to market in a future newsletter. For now, here’s my method.

My stories almost always begin with a scenario:

• What happens to a young girl caught in a terrorist attack?

• What if a businessman found alien technology and refused to turn it over to the government?

A character or situation sparks a question, and I build outward from there.

A quick warning if you’re early in your writing journey:
One of screenwriting’s most famous rules is “If you want to send a message, go to the post office.”
Stories written solely to preach a message rarely work. Messages must grow from the characters and the narrative—not the other way around.

Focus on character, conflict, and scenario.
If a message emerges, let it be organic, not forced.

Though I’ve written nonfiction political books (I’m a news junkie), if I had to choose between nonfiction success and fiction success, I’d pick fiction every time. I love escaping into new worlds—and that’s what most readers want too.

So that’s what I aim to give them:
Good stories that transport readers somewhere else, even if only for a little while.
